I *want* to like this guy, hell I do kinda like this guy but I keep detecting this hint of a sneering “SF & NY are the only real places” tone that is so offputting.
Anyway.. Great article great podcast great guest. Keep up the good work Dudley!
I suppose whether or not these scenes still exist is a matter of location. Perhaps what I'm about to describe is pageantry, but the first date I brought my wife to was to a Dark 80s Synthrock Dance Party at a club in Brooklyn called Saint Vitus (now closed) three years ago. The club was filled with men between 35 and 50 and women in their early to mid 20s complete with teased out hair an leg warmers. The music was goth rock and post-punk. The club was closed by the fire marshal but moved the show to another venue, so it's still ongoing.

“Hot topic is terrifying…for a kid. Definitely not adults. I am not at all terrified of hot topic it’s totally chill in there.”

I saw Earth at St. Vitus
I interpret it as less of a sneer and more of a lament at how the urban planning despoils the areas he describes
