Cycling back through the catalogue of NPR Radio while waiting for the next episode. Let dat Mr Simpson know: "Ryszard" is a difficult name to pronounce. It's OK to say Richard instead.
Great first episode. I especially like the section about the demise of pitchfork. I was around during its heyday as well, and I thought you both made some pretty great points about the forensic, hyper-competitive way men collect, argue about and enjoy things that I wish someone would make into a long form essay, because it's 100% accurate. It's why there was no authenticity to a "serious" review about a pop star, or why a female sports announcer sounds like a mimic. Girls just don't argue about or care about things in the same unhealthy way guys do, and pretending everybody cares about the same stuff in the same way was always doomed to fail.
This is why I think Pitchfork could have survived simply by focusing on something else that nerdy white guys could get autistic about. Unfortunately, it turns out that isn't pop music. It's melodically tuneful, it's often even art -- it just isnt pitching statistics or Pavement albums.
I think you see this a lot with white guys tearing each other apart online over whether Rey is a Palpatine or a Skywalker, or whether Ray received enough Jedi training, and girls are like, "Ughh! Why can't they just enjoy Star Wars?" Lady, this IS them enjoying Star Wars.
Yes, and they had been doing coverage of obscure Afrobeat compilations and Japanese noise bands and Brazilian psych the whole time, so their site was already pretty diverse. Music nerds love all that stuff. And they can sperg out about pop music and hip hop too. But Pitchfork reached a saturation point with hip hop and pop comprising more than half of the coverage, a fixation was obviously mission-driven ("You WILL enjoy mumble rap, bigot") and a result of the original writers being replaced by people who wanted to shift the culture.
It's just on Substck for now, so if you are subbed you'll get the episodes in your inbox. If it really takes off maybe we'll syndicate through the common platforms.
Substack is an absurd platform for publishing podcasts, but yes, there *are* RSS feeds here, and what you are offering is in no sense a “podcast” without one. We are not going to sit fixedly at our computers playing your audio.
Next you’ll tell us that a YouTube playlist is a “podcast.”
If you go to "Manage Subscription" on mobile, it links to the mobile web browser version. Scroll down you'll see the RSS link under "Private Podcast Feed."
Also, even without the RSS feed, the *podcast* plays well in the Substack app.
Substack does a terrible job of letting you interact how you want with their product. The mobile app and desktop browser experience are too different as demonstrated by this issue.
Going forward, lose that Simpson guy as co-host. I know the right has many different factions, but this guy doesnt seem like he's in any of them; he comes off as more Barstool sports normie than rightwing.
That's my two cents, anyhow. You'll do what you do, and that's fine. I'll try listening to the next episode, and if it's not for me then so be it.
Excellent voice physiognomy - a great relief
Can't believe your platforming a Taylor Swift truther, smh

I need to get back on the podcasting horse...this comment has inspired me to return to the airwaves.

Great podcast! Is there an RSS feed?

Alright dickhead I'll look into it!
I played it in my car, dickhead!
OK yeah, there's an RSS feed button in the right-hand column on desktop. Can't find it on the mobile app.

Congrats on the latest venture.
Great, thanks!

We'll have a rotating cast of hosts. You should read some of Isaac's writing if you don't think he's based.
